Controlled Burn II (Travelogue, 2023)

Description: In July 2023, I took a solo journey across the Northern American landscape. Throughout the trip, I composed a running poem encapsulating my overall experience:

The road is my home;

cry freedom, cry freedom!

It calls me forth, and beyond -

North Dakota puts me in touch,

where the buffalo roam -

Vast swaths of big-headed 

steel fields now take their stead -

But the ancient vantage point

can be reclaimed,

if you posses a wild heart -

~

Montana is more than a big sky;

you can also surf its Great Plains -

In time, the glaciers will have melted,

but I will have seen them -

The undammed river gets to be free -

~

Idaho cuts deep,

to the fault line of my soul -

Where truth flows like lava, 

breaching the surface; to freedom -

And if there is suppression,

I hope you brought a gun -

Because I am willing to die,

along the Salmon run -

~

Wyoming gives me milk,

from the Grand Teton;

the last bit before the ween -

Acting as a whisper,

that gets softer with every breath -

The medicine kicks in,

and sends me high above the Shadow -

It ain’t the Devils Tower,

because the grizzly bear climbed it first -

~

The fences of man will corral the beast,

and tame the beast within -

Fee roads will be instituted,

with plenty of places to park 

a mind molded by boundary -

The mountain top will have full bars;

and the creeks too -

But if you listen to the wind;

If you listen to the flowing water;

If you listen to your heart;

God will be revealed -
